Conference “The Monuments under occupation: on the path of historical memory”

 
 
 

Institute on Human Rights of ANAS and the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations co-organized the conference “The Monuments under occupation: on the path of historical memory” on February 18, 2015.

 

The chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations, Mubariz Gurbanli emphasized in the opening remarks that numerous monuments have remained under occupation. He brought to attention of participants that mosques, libraries, and as well as other monuments are among these monuments.  Government agencies and foundations give the information about these monuments.  A lot of work was done on religious monuments which have been destroyed by Armenians both in Yerevan and Karabakh and the main objective of implemantion of this work is to support the attack diplomacy of president Ilham Aliyev.

 

The director of the Institute on Human Rights of ANAS Aytan Mustafayeva has stated in her speech that not only mosques, but also monuments belonging to other religions were destroyed in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. Then she said that Azerbaijan has always respected the cultures of other nations, but unfortunately, there are serious problems in Europe on these issues today. The issues on tolerance are indicated in the documents of European Commission.   Despite this,  islamophobia spread as a result of growing crisis in Europe against peaceful Muslims. Today Azerbaijan protects its culture icluding tolerance. Of course, this is our way of life and we shouldn’t give any chance to damage it.

 

The staff of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations, Aliheydar Zulfugarov mentioned that the protection of historical and cultural monuments under occupation is important. A. Zulfugarov added that more than 900 monuments are under occupation  and Armenian occupation is conducted in 3 directions. First, devastation, second “privatization”, thirdgregorianization. Destructive policy is implemented by Armenians against “Shah Abbas”, “Goy” mosque and other monuments in Yerevan.

 

The chairman of the public association on Protection of historical and cultural monuments in the occupied territories, Faig Ismailov said that the Armenians violated all norms of the international law, destroyed monuments belonging to Azerbaijan, in many cases they tried to privatize them.

 

Then the vice-president of ANAS, academician Isa Habibbayli mentioned the importance of such joint events by research institution and government agencies.

 

The director of the center for Strategic Research,  Farhad Mammadov mentioning the importance of the event emphasized that to deliver science-based, systematic information to the world serves the interests of our state. According to his words, cultural monuments under occupation are the facts that Azerbaijanis historically lived there.

 

Representative of the Jewish community emphasized in his speech that tolerence in Azerbaijan can be an example to other countries in the world, and stressed that historically Jews and Azerbaijanis lived in peace in these territories.

 

At the end of the conference, the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizationsand the Institute on Human Rights of ANAS signed a memorandum on cooperation.
